Because this is a very common sentiment amongst the online community, it has been said by many that registry cleaners are simply a rip-off. On this web-page, I'd like to do my best to clear the air about Windows registry cleaners and see if we can make some sense of what they are and what they do. What is a computer registry?

In reality, there is no such thing as a computer registry! The registry is part of a Windows operating system. In fact, the registry is probably the most important part of the Windows OS. This is because it is the registry that keeps track of everything related to the computer on which the operating system is installed.

The registry keeps track of all the users of the computer and all their personal settings. It also keeps track of all programs that have been installed on the computer and all the hardware associated with the computer. What's more, it knows where all the information on the hard drive is stored.

So, you can see the registry is not only a viable part of the operating system, but you can also see that without the registry there would be no way for your computer to perform any operations.

Technical details as to why this corruption develops make for a very boring subject. It is better just to understand it does. However, the short version is registry corruption occurs when programs are deleted from the computer. It is important to note that all upgrades are deletions and new re-installs. It is also important to understand that temporary Internet files are installed and deleted rapidly. This operation, too, leaves registry corruption.

What does registry corruption do that is so bad?

Corrupt registry files are files that no longer have a purpose in the registry. Windows leaves these registry files behind after program files and temporary internet files that are associated with them are removed. Because the program or files associated with these corrupt files are no longer installed on the computer, these registry files have no need to still be in the registry.

However, because they are there, the computer must carry out the operations these files point to. Since these files point to nothing, the computer must go through all its files looking for deleted stuff. This is an operation that takes time. It is also an operation that bears no fruit. Of course, a computer that must seek out files that no longer exist will look as if it is operating very slowly.

Actually, the computer is not slow it all. In fact, it is doing things as fast as it ever has. The problem is it is doing a lot of operations that get it nowhere. Therefore, since the computer is not completing its operations in a timely fashion, we see the computer as being slow. Sometimes registry corruption will make a computer appear to be very, very slow!

Not only will registry corruption make a computer seem to be very slow, it may also cause computer crashes and freeze up's. As a computer technician, I've seen many computers that were constantly freezing and crashing. These computers were also operating very slowly between these freeze-ups and crashes. In most cases, these computers were put back into tip top shape by simply running a registry cleaner.

Once registry corruption is removed from the Windows OS, the computer will now be free of running useless operation. In other words, everything it does will be a step closer to completing the goal of returning the information you sought to you. What this means, from the user's perspective, is a computer that is once again fast.

I am often asked which registry tools a computer user needs to use in order to keep his or her computer running at its best. The answer to this question is simple: a registry cleaner. Of course, this is the only tool a person needs to keep his computer running well, but it is the only registry tool that is needed.

Naturally, we have to keep spyware and viruses out of our computer because they can raise havoc in many ways! One of those ways is to slow down your computer and cause errors and crashes. These are the same things registry corruption will do to your computer. However, spyware and viruses will also do other things that will not only do potential harm to your Windows operating system, but may do harm to your personal life.

Spyware Can Harm You!

This is true because spyware can steal personal information about you. Many people have had their identity stolen because of spyware! So, it goes without saying you have to have malware protection to keep this type of thing from happening to you.

Registry corruption will not harm you in this way but it will certainly do damage to your Windows operating system if it is left unchecked. In fact, I see more cases where registry corruption has deteriorated a computer's performance than anything else. In other words, if your computer is slowing down or if it is crashing frequently or it is having start up or shut down problems, it is usually registry corruption behind.

Registry Cleaners Are the Best Registry Tools

There was a time when registry tools other than a registry cleaner were needed to cure registry corruption. One very prevalent tool that is still available is called regedit. Regedit is a Windows registry editor and it is part of your Windows operating system. This is true whether you're running Windows 98, Windows 7 or something in between. However, there is one thing that must be said about regedit; don't use it!

This is because this program is to be used by people who are thoroughly familiar with editing a Windows registry manually. If you do not have a lot of experience doing so, don't use regedit. The reason for this is there is no room for error when you edit your registry manually. It only takes one mistake to make your operating system unusable.

There really isn't any reason to use any registry tool other than a registry cleaner anyway. Why? Because registry cleaners are so easy to use and the right one will do a great job restoring your Windows registry to its original pristine state in doing so will allow your computer to be on its best behavior once again.

You Can't Use a Vista Registry Cleaner In Place of a Windows 7 Registry Cleaner

All Windows operating systems use a filing system that is known as a registry. This goes back as far as Windows 95. Before Windows 95 Windows also had a type of a registry but it is not the kind we know of today.

Ever since Windows 95, every new version of every operating system that came on the scene was bigger than its previous counterparts. This is true in fact, even for Windows 95 itself, as Windows 95 SP2 was much bigger than the original Windows 95 version. In fact, the difference between the earlier version of Windows 95 and the later version may have been the biggest difference between two subsequent Windows operating systems.

That aside, each new Windows operating system developed was larger than the previous version until Windows 7 came on the market. Windows 7 was known as a more streamlined version of the Windows operating system. It is still huge and it is arguable whether or not it is actually smaller than Windows Vista but in Windows 7 an attempt was made to keep the operating system as streamlined as possible.

Besides the size issue, Windows 7 is a far different operating system than Windows Vista and therefore, software that works on Windows Vista will not necessarily work on Windows 7. The registries in these two Windows products are similar in the fact that they are five hive registries as opposed to Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME which were all six hive systems. However, even though they both use five hives, there are other internal differences between Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Of course, another factor that makes for differences in operating systems is whether or not they are 64-bit systems or if they are just the regular older style 32 bit system. 64-bit came on the scene with Windows XP though it was very rare and most Windows XP operating systems are 32-bit.

Windows Vista also has a 64-bit operating system which is more prevalent than the Windows XP 64-bit OS. Since 64-bit operating systems are synonymous with video and actually, were developed to better accommodate video, Windows 7's 64-bit system is not rare at all.

64-bit operating systems are used on computers whose CPUs employ dual core processors. Taking into account the operating system is 64-bit and the processor has two cores lead you to believe this system is twice as fast as its predecessor, the 32-bit operating system. While it may not be exactly twice as fast, 64-bit system is much faster than its predecessor and will address far more memory.

In short, every Windows operating system is different than all the others. Though some operating systems are very similar, Windows 95 SP2 and Windows 98 come to mind, they are all different and you can only run software such as a Windows registry cleaner that is marked as ready or certified for the operating system you want to use it on.

Before registry cleaners were developed, cleaning a registry was a most difficult task. A computer technician had to address the registry through an interface provided by Windows known as regedit. Once the technician was working in this interface he would try to find files that didn't belong there and remove them. The scary part is, if he accidentally removed a file that was still needed in the registry, the computer may have lost its inability to boot up ever again. In such a case, the operating system would have to be reinstalled. This is a most troubling prognosis because reinstalling an operating system would mean losing all the files, such as word documents, that were installed on the hard drive.

So, it is fortunate that today we have the option of simply using a commercial registry cleaner to take care of registry problems without fear of making matters worse. It is also fortunate registry cleaners are very inexpensive and will do a complete job of fixing registry problems in usually 10 to 15 minutes.
